Go Back

Your Cheatin' Heart

Words & Music by Hank Williams

Lyrics:

Your cheatin' heart will make you weep
You'll cry and cry and try to sleep
But sleep won't come the whole night through
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you

When tears come down like falling rain
You'll toss around and call my name
You're gonna walk that floor the way that I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you

When tears come down like falling rain
You'll toss around and call my name
You're gonna walk that floor just the way that I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you

Your cheatin' heart will tell on you
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you

Hank Williams wrote and recorded Your Cheatin' Heart (MGM 11416) in late 1952. The record was issued just after his death on January 1, 1953. It went to Billboard's country chart and became the top country & western record of the year. The flip side, Kaw-Liga, reached number one. At about the same time, Joni James recorded a pop version of Your Cheatin' Heart (MGM 11426) to rose to #2 on the pop chart. Both recordings were million-sellers. In 1962 Ray Charles (ABC-Paramount 10375) had another popular release of the song.

On February 1, 1958, Elvis recorded Your Cheatin' Heart at Radio Recorders. The commercial release was a splice of two or more takes. In 1982 an unspliced alternate take surfaced in United Kingdom in an eleven-EP boxed set. Earlier, another alternate take was used on a Reader's Digest boxed set in that country.
