You Don't Know Me

Words & Music by Eddy Arnold, Cindy Walker

Lyrics:

You give your hand to me and then you say hello
And I can hardly speak, my heart is beating so
And anyone could tell, you think you know me well
But you don't know me

No you don't know the one who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips and longs to hold you tight
To you I'm just a friend, and that's all I've ever been
No, you don't know me

For I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
Afraid and shy I let my chance go by
The chance that you might love me too

You give your hand to me and then you say good-bye
I watch you walk away beside the lucky guy
To never, never know the one who loves you so
No, you don't know me

More info:
Eddy Arnold and Cindy Walker wrote You Don't Know Me in 1955. Although Arnold probably first recorded the song, it was Jerry Vale's version (Columbia 40710) that was first released in 1956. His recording reached #14 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, while Arnold's (RCA 6502) later peaked at #10 on the country chart. Six years later, Ray Charles took You Don't Know Me (ABC-Paramount 10345) to #2 on the Hot 100 chart, #5 on the rhythm and blues chart, and number one on the Easy-Listening chart. His is the only recording of the song to become a million seller.

Elvis sang You Don't Know Me in his 1967 movie Clambake. The film version, which was backed by a string section, was recorded on February 22, 1967, at RCA's Nashville studios. On September 11, 1967, he recorded the record version. His single release had a six-week stay on the Hot 100 chart, reaching a high of #44. It toppped out at #34 on the Easy-Listening chart.
