Go Back

Tumblin' Tumbleweeds

Words & Music by Bob Nolan

I keep rolling along
Deep in my heart is a song
Here on the ranch I belong
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds

See them tumblin' down
Pledging their love to the ground
Lonely but free I'll be found
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds

Cares of the past are behind
Nowhere to go, but I'll find
Just where the trail will wind
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds

I know when night has gone
That a new world's born at dawn
I'll keep rolling along
Deep in my heart is a song
Here on the ranch I belong
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds

I know when night has gone
That a new world's born at dawn
I'll keep rolling along
Deep in my heart is a song
Here on the ranch I belong
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds

Cares of the past are behind
Nowhere to go, but I'll find
Just where the trail will wind
Driftin' along with the tumblin' tumbleweeds

Tumblin' Tumbleweeds was written by Bob Nolan and recorded by his group, the Sons of the Pioneers, in 1934 (Decca 46027). The original title was Tumbling Weeds, but Nolan had to add two syllables to make it a better fit in the lyrics. Nolan sang Tumbling Tumbleweeds in the 1935 Gene Autry film Tumbling Tumbleweeds. Both Roger Williams (Kapp 156) in 1956 and Billy Vaughn (Dot 15710) in 1958 reached Billboard's Top 100 chart, peaking at #60 and #30, respectively.

Before singing Don't You Know, Elvis sang one line of Tumbling Tumbleweeds at the Waco, Texas, home of disc jockey Eddie Fadal in the summer of 1958. In 1966 Elvis made some home recordings at Graceland, that Red West found many years after. A recording of this song was released for the first time in 1999 in The Home Recordings CD.
