Go Back

Soldier Boy

Words & Music by David Jones, Theodore Williams

Soldier boy why feel blue
Don't you believe that she will be true
It's written in the book
That she was meant for only you

Soldier boy tell me why do you cry
When you return she'll rush to your side
It's written in the book
That she was meant for only you

So prove your love is true
She'll be there to say "I do"
And if you go o'er sea or land
She'll make you understand

While you're gone oh try to believe
Her love for you is really for real
It's written in the book
That she was meant for only you

So prove your love is true
She'll be there to say "I do"
And if you go o'er sea or land
She'll make you understand

While you're gone oh try to believe
Her love for you is really for real
It's written in the book
That she was meant for only you

First album:

RCA LSP-2231, 1960, Elvis Is Back

First recorded:

RCA Studios, Nashville, March 20, 1960

Soldier Boy was written in Korea in 1951 by David Jones and Larry Banks (although credited to David Jones and Teddy Williams Jr.), and first recorded by the Four Fellows with the Abie Baker Orchestra (Glory 234) in 1955. Other recordings in 1955 included those by Pat O'Day (MGM 12025) and Sunny Gale (47-6227). This is not the same song as the Shirelles' 1962 number one hit

Elvis recorded Soldier Boy at RCA's Nashville studios on March 20, 1960. While stationed in West Germany, Elvis made a home recording of Soldier Boy, that was released in 1984 on the boxed set A Golden Celebration. While he was dating Anita Wood, it was "their song".
