Go Back

Until It's Time for You to Go

Words & Music by Buffy Sainte-Marie

Lyrics:

You're not a dream
You're not an angel
You're a woman
I'm not a king,
I'm a man,
Take my hand
We'll make a space
In the lives that we planned
And here we'll stay
Until it's time for you to go

Yes, we're diff'rent worlds apart
We're not the same
Whe laughed and played
At the start like in a game
You could have stayed
Outside my heart
But in you came
And here you'll stay
Until it's time for you to go

Don't ask why,
Don't ask how
Don't ask forever,
Love me now

This love of mine
Had no beginning
It has no end
I was an oak,
Now I'm a willow
Now I can bend
And tho' I'll never
In my life see you again
I still stay
Until it's time for you to go

More info:
Buffy Sainte-Marie, who was born on a Cree Indian Reservation in Saskatchewan, Canada, wrote Until it's Time for You to Go in 1965 and recorded it for her album Many a Mile. That same year, Monkee member Michael Nesmith, using the pseudonym Michael Blessing, recorded a version of the song on Colpix Records (Colpix 792). In the United Kingdom the Four Pennies reached #19 with their recording. In late 1970 composer Sainte-Marie finally released a single of her song (Vanguard 35116), but it failed to chart. Earlier that year, Neil Diamond (Uni 55204) reached #53 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. A recording of Until it's Time for You to Go by New Birth (RCA 0003) did less well in 1973 (#97).

Elvis often sang Until it's Time for You to Go on tour and in Las Vegas in the 1970s. MGM filmed one of his performances in April 1972, for inclusion in the documentary Elvis on Tour. It´s probable that the single release of the song was recorded at RCA's Nashville studios on May 17, 1971, although RCA claims that it's from the June 8, 1971, session. Elvis's recording reached #40 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and stayed on the chart for nine weeks. It reached #68 on the country chart (for two weeks), and #9 on the Easy-Listening chart (for seven weeks).
