Go Back

The Twelfth Of Never

Words & Music by Francis Webster, Jerry Livingston

Go Back

The Twelfth Of Never

Words & Music by Francis Webster, Jerry Livingston

You ask how much I need you
Must I explain
I need you oh my darling
Like roses need rain

You ask how long I'll love you
I'll tell you true
Until the twelfth of never I'll still be loving you

Hold me close
Never let me go
Hold me close
Melt my heart like April snow

I'll love you 'till the blue bells forget to bloom
I'll love you 'till the clover has lost its perfume
I'll love you 'till the poets run out of rhyme

Oh, until the twelfth of never
And that's a long long time
Until the twelfth of never
And that's a long long time

The Twelfth of Never was written by Paul Francis Webster and Jerry Livingston and recorded by Johnny Mathis (Columbia 40993) in 1956. His recording, backed by the Ray Conniff Orchestra, reached #9 on Billboard's Top 100 chart and became a million-seller. The flip side of the record was Chances Are, an even bigger hit. Mathis's recording of The Twelfth of Never was heard in the 1977 Steven Spielberg movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In 1973 Donny Osmond (MGM 14503) had a million-seller with his version of the song, reaching #8 on the Hot 100 chart.

Elvis sang The Twelfth of Never in concert on a few occasions in the 1970s. One of those performances appeared on the 10-incg bootleg LP Elvis Special, Volume 2 until it was officially released by RCA in 1995, in the boxed set Walk a Mile in My Shoes.
