Go Back

Shake, Rattle And Roll

Words & Music by Charles E. Calhoun

Well get out of that bed, wash your face and hands
Get out of that bed, wash your face and hands
Well get in that kitchen
Make some noise with the pots and pans
I believe it to my soul you're the devil in nylon hose
I believe it to my soul you're the devil in nylon hose
For the harder I work the faster my money goes

Well I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
Well you won't do right
To save your doggone soul

Shake rattle and roll

I'm like the one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store
I'm like the one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store
Well I can look at you tell you ain't no child no more
I believe you're doing me wrong and now I know
I believe you're doing me wrong and now I know
'Cause the harder I work the faster my money goes

Well I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
Well you won't do right
To save your doggone soul

Play it again!

I went over the hill, way down underneath
I went over the hill, way down underneath
You make me roll my eyes
And then you make me grit my teeth

Well I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake rattle and roll
Well you won't do right
To save your doggone soul

Shake Rattle and Roll was written by Jesse Stone using the pseudonym Charles E. Calhoun, and first recorded by Joe Turner (Atlantic 1026) in 1954. Turner's recording was a #2 rhythm and blues hit. Bill Haley and His Comets recorded a version of Shake Rattle and Roll on April 12, 1954 - the same day that Rock Around the Clock was recorded. Haley's release (Decca 29204), which used less suggestive lyrics, reached #7 on Billboard's Best-Selling Singles chart and sold over a million copies.

Elvis recorded Shake Rattle and Roll on February 3, 1956, at RCA's New York City studios. His version reverted to Turner's lyrics, although one verse from Haley's recording was used. Elvis's single release did not chart. In late 1956 Buddy Holly recorded Shake Rattle and Roll with virtually the same lyrics as on Elvis's version, but his version was not released until 1964 on the Showcase LP.

Elvis sang Shake Rattle and Roll (with a Flip Flop and Fly ending) on his first Stage Show appearance on January 28, 11956. He also performed the song on The Milton Berle Show on April 3, 1956. A film clip of the Stage Show appearance was used in the 1981 documentary This Is Elvis. Drums were overdubbed on that clip.
