Release Me

Words & Music by Eddie Miller, W. S. Stevenson

Lyrics:

Oh please release me, let me go
For I just don't love you anymore
To waste our lives would be a sin
Release me and let me love again

I have found a new love dear
And I will always want her near
Her lips are warm while yours are cold
Oh release me, my darling let me go

Please release me, let me go
For I just don't love you anymore
To waste our lives would be a sin
Release me and let me love again

Let me go, oh release me, my darling
Let me go

More info:
Release Me was written by Eddie Miller and W. S. Stevenson (Dub Williams) in 1953 and recorded by Jimmy Heap (Capital 2518) late that year. His recording reached #5 on Billboard's country chart in early 1954. Just a few weeks later, Kitty Wells (Decca 29023) and Ray Price (Columbia 21214) released their versions, with Price's peaking at #7. In 1962 Little Esther Phillips resurrected the tune as a number one rhythm & blues hit. Her rendition, as well as Englebert Humperdinck's (Parrot 40011) in 1967, were million-sellers. Humperdinck's reached #4 on the Hot 100 cart. The song's full title is Release Me (and Let Me Love Again). It is the world's most-performed country song. In 1967 the Music Operators of America called Released Me the most popular song of the year in jukebox play. Eddie miller was inspired to write the song after overhearing a couple arguing in a bar near San Francisco. The wife said, "If you'd release me, we wouldn't have any problems and everything would be all right." Miller thought it was an interesting way to ask for a divorce.

Elvis sang Release Me in concert in the 1970s. His performance on February 18, 1970, at the International Hotel in Las Vegas was recorded by RCA for album release.
